Imprisoned border guards speak out

Former U.S. Border Patrol agent Ignacio “Nacho” Ramos wakes up in the middle of the night expecting a guard to shine a flashlight in his face. Jose Alonso Compean, his colleague, still has nightmares that he’s not really home.

It has not been easy readjusting to life outside their one-man prison cells where they spent the last two years of their lives in segregation.

Since the commutation of their sentences by President Bush on his last day in office, the former agents, who were charged with the non-fatal shooting of a Mexican national after he abandoned a load of marijuana near the border, are learning to live in the world again.

Since being released from prison on Feb 17, both men were confined to house arrest for 31 days and were barred from speaking to the media until their sentences ended Friday.

In an exclusive interview with The Washington Times, the two men, now fighting to have their convictions wiped off the record, spoke of their ordeal since the incident in Fabens, Texas, in 2005 that changed their lives.

Mr. Ramos and Mr. Compean were convicted of causing serious bodily injury, assault with a deadly weapon, discharge of a firearm in relation to a crime of violence, and a civil rights violation. They were sentenced to 11 and 12 years in prison, respectively.

Mr. Ramos’ attorney, David Botsford, has asked the Supreme Court to review the convictions and an answer as to whether the court will review the case is expected within a week, the agents said.

“It’s been tough,” Mr. Ramos said by telephone.

“Growing up as a kid your parents tell you don’t do anything bad because you could end up in prison. I didn’t do anything bad but there I was,” Mr. Ramos said. “I love my country, still do, and still I would sit in the prison cell [and] wonder, how did I end up in a place I never thought I would be in million years.

“But I had faith in God, I had my family and I had so many people from across the country that never forgot about me. It pulled me through.”

The two men served their prison sentences from Jan. 17, 2007, until last month.

“I wake up sometimes out of my sleep and wonder what if,” Mr. Ramos said. “What if no one ever heard about my story? What if no one ever knew what really happened that day? We would still be sitting in prison. Our children wouldn’t have fathers, our wives wouldn’t have husbands.”

The Times has documented the plight of the agents in more than three dozen stories since October 2006.

Several members of Congress called on Mr. Bush over the years to either pardon the agents or commute their sentences and at one point, U.S. Attorney Johnny Sutton in Texas, whose office prosecuted the case, said in an interview with The Times that the “punishment was high” but Congress had mandated the sentences.

The case became a national cause celebre, with border security activists garnering the signatures of more than half million people asking the president to pardon or commute their sentences.

For Mr. Sutton and Assistant U.S. Attorney Deborah Kanoff, who successfully prosecuted the case, it was a matter of two federal officers violating the civil rights of Osvaldo Aldrete-Davila, a Mexican citizen who later was convicted of transporting marijuana across the border in a second load.

Ms. Kanoff said in a 2006 interview the agents violated the Border Patrol’s pursuit policy and should have never attempted to apprehend the drug smuggler in the first place. Ms. Kanoff could not be reached for comment on the presidential commutation.

On July 28, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans rendered a 46-page opinion upholding the convictions on several of the major counts except the obstruction of justice charges for tampering with an official proceeding.

However, it is the federal gun charges — the discharge of a firearm in relation to a crime of violence — that added 10 years to their sentences. Mr. Botsford has petitioned the Supreme Court to review the charges that were upheld.

The agents were convicted of shooting Aldrete-Davila in the buttocks as he fled across the Rio Grande after abandoning a van loaded with $1 million of marijuana. They argued during trial the smuggler was armed and they shot him in self defense when he pointed something shiny at them.

Prosecutor’s said Aldrete-Davila was not carrying a weapon and he testified against the agents at the trial. He also testified that he was only smuggling to help his sick mother in Mexico. The prosecutors also argued that the border agents didn’t report the shooting and that Mr. Compean’s picking up several spent shell casings was evidence that he was trying to hide something.

Aldrete-Davila was charged and convicted last year for smuggling a second load of marijuana into the U.S. Prior to his arrest by the DEA, he had received full medical treatment from the U.S. government and a border crossing card that allowed him to come into the U.S. at his leisure.

The agents’ story raised questions on the role of U.S. law-enforcement officers patrolling the border, where violence has risen to such extraordinary levels that senior officials in President Obama’s administration have called it a major national security concern.

The two agents said they had never expected to be at the center of the storm.

“I’ve learned to not believe everything I read or hear when it comes to arrests,” said Mr. Compean. “When I was in law enforcement, I would hear people say they were innocent or set up but most of us didn’t believe it.
It wasn’t until it happened to me that I wondered how many other people are sitting in cells who are innocent.”

The former agents, who have three children each, said it was their faith in God and the love of their family, friends and strangers that got them through the toughest times.

Mr. Ramos said his three young sons are his inspiration to keep fighting the convictions.

“I’m not a famous baseball player or football player,” he said. “We’ve been through a lot as a family but really the only thing I want is for my sons to look up to me and say, that’s my dad. I want them to know that we have strength when we stick together. I just want my boys to be happy.”

Mr. Compean said his only plans now are to take his children to the “park and take my wife out to dinner.” For now, he’s going to help his family and take over duties as a full-time caretaker for his father-in-law, who was in a car accident and was in a three-month coma.

“I have faith that something good will come from all of this,” he said. “It’s strange but everything now seems different. Just being with my family and being able to spend time with them is plans enough for me.”

Monica Ramos removed all the pictures and memorabilia of her husband’s work with the Border Patrol before he returned home last month. Her house is now filled with photos of the family and of friends, both old and new, who have supported them through “the worst and most miraculous time in their lives.”

Every week for the past two years, despite economic hardships and time constraints, she visited her husband in prison.

“We learned how to pray together as a family,” Mr. Ramos said. “It took me going to prison to learn how to pray as a family. In a sense, we grew stronger and we learned that miracles really happen despite the terrible things that happened over the last few years. We found each other again and I learned that life is precious and we shouldn’t take anything for granted.”

What we don't know about Obama

We know a lot more about Barack Obama than we did on Election Day. He wastes little time making big decisions. He was serious about surrounding himself with seasoned people, even if they are outsized personalities likely to jostle one another and unlikely to salute on command. He intends to move quickly to put his personal stamp on government and national life.

Yet much about how the 44th president will govern remains a mystery—perhaps even to Obama himself.

The stirring rhetoric witnessed on the campaign trail and in Tuesday’s inaugural address is laced with spacious language — flexible enough to support conflicting conclusions about what he really believes.

Only decisions, not words, can clarify what Obama stands for. Those are coming soon enough.

Until then, here are the questions still left hanging as the Obama administration begins:

DOES HE REALLY THINK AFGHANISTAN IS WINNABLE?

The new president has strongly signaled that he thinks the answer is yes. But neither his rhetoric nor his policy proposals so far have fully reckoned with the implications.

If he intends to win in Afghanistan, he is not going to be a Peacemaker President. To the contrary, he is committing himself to being just as much of a War President as George W. Bush, certainly for the first term and very possibly for a potential second.

Most military experts think a decisive win in Afghanistan — as opposed to a muddle-through strategy leading to a gradual withdrawal —will involve a major surge in troops and a willingness to tolerate high costs and high casualties.

In any event, the country and its unruly neighbor, Pakistan, will quite likely dominate Obama’s attention much more than Iraq.

Obama advisers say one of the biggest surprises of recent secret briefings on trouble spots around the globe was how unstable, exposed and dangerous Pakistan is. A nuclear neighbor that harbors terrorists injects all the more danger and uncertainty to the war on the other side of its border.

Joe Biden’s first trip abroad as vice President-elect included a stop in Afghanistan. When he returned home, he told Obama: “The truth is that things are going to get tougher in Afghanistan before they’re going to get better.”

If that’s true, Obama may in the end find muddle-through more attractive than victory.

DO DEFICITS MATTER?

In the short-run, Obama and his advisers believe, just like Bush and his advisers, that pumping up the economy is the top priority —budget deficits be damned.

But when does the short-run become the long-run?

Obama has said long-term, trillion-dollar deficits are “unsustainable.” His inaugural address warned about the need to cut programs that don’t work and make “hard choices.”

Does he really mean it? If so, the second half of Obama’s first term likely will be marked by austerity just as much as the first half is going to be marked by massive spending in the name of economic stimulus.

Embracing balanced budgets would also mean embracing steep cuts in weapons systems and entitlement programs, as well as curbing his ambitions for new initiatives in health care and energy. Tax hikes would also be part of the remedy.

With unpleasant medicine like this, Obama may instead find common cause with Democratic liberals and with Dick Cheney, who, according to former Treasury Secretary Paul O’Neill, once dismissed GOP deficit hawks by saying that Ronald Reagan proved that deficits don’t matter.

HOW FAST IS TOO FAST IN IRAQ?

The president says he still wants U.S. troops out of Iraq in 16 months. Tellingly, he always adds caveats that conditions and advice from commanders will dictate the pace. Defense Secretary Gates recently made this clear: “He also said he wanted to have a responsible drawdown. And he also said he was prepared to listen to his commanders. So, I think that that’s exactly the position the president-elect should be in.”

What if conditions change for the worse? Violence is way down and many of the most troubled areas are showing signs of stability. But this remains an extremely volatile region that could erupt in new bloodshed. Will Obama still cling to a speedy pull-out if it means the country could implode?

Obama met with his military commanders on Wednesday. But it’s anyone’s guess whose advice he’ll be listening to most closely, and which members of his heavyweight foreign policy team – within which there are significant disagreements over the Iraq war – will really have his ear.

WHAT’S IN THE FILES?

Any time someone criticized their policies on use of force, covert surveillance, or detention or interrogation of terrorism suspects, Bush and Cheney had an answer that was impossible for any outside critic to fully contend with: You don’t know what we know.

What they said they knew was top-secret intelligence showing how many people with murderous designs on the United States are roaming the planet, how imminent the threats are, or how effective controversial anti-terrorist programs had been in averting another attack. Since no one else could see the files, no one else could be on equal footing in deciding whether the administration was right or wrong.

Since Tuesday, Obama has all the same files, and all the same access to the nation’s top secrets, that Bush and Cheney ever did.

How will Obama react when he gets a constant morning diet of dire warnings? The president today moved to shut down the prison camp at Guantanamo Bay and end torture – and has surrounded himself with critics of both who are unlikely to tolerate backsliding. But it is not unfathomable that Obama has a “Few Good Men” moment and has to tell liberals and civil libertarians they can’t handle the truth – and that drastic steps sometimes need to be taken to avert disastrous consequences. What’s more, it is hardly a given that any president—no matter his philosophy—would wish to give up the expanded executive power that Bush claimed in the name of national security.

DO UNIONS WEAR WHITE HATS?

Obama, for the entire campaign, said all the right things when it comes to keeping peace with Big Labor. He praised the power and fairness of unions. He expressed skepticism about free trade agreements like NAFTA. Most of all, he proudly sponsored legislation to make it much easier for workers to unionize.

Lately, he sounds like a man rethinking his enthusiasm.

In a recent interview with the Washington Post, he suggested he would not aggressively push for legislation to free workers to easily unionize (the bill is known as the Employee Free Choice Act. “If we are losing half a million jobs a month, then there are no jobs to unionize.” Even Nancy Pelosi seems inclined to cut him some slack for a while on this one – but at some point the pressure will intensify and we will learn if this is truly a pro-union White House.

CAN U.S. POWER SAVE DARFUR?

Darfur will be the first test case - but almost certainly not the last one - in which we will learn just how strongly Obama believes his stated view that the United States should act aggressively when it can use its military power to stop genocide or other humanitarian catastrophes.

There is powerful momentum inside the Democratic Party to come to the aid of the suffering people of Darfur. Among the biggest advocates are two of Obama’s top advisers: Biden and U.N Ambassador-designate Susan Rice.

But with the military stretched thin, and with many others in his administration more skeptical about the use of force on problems that don’t directly threaten national security, nothing is likely to happen unless Obama puts his own influence and reputation strongly behind an intervention.

During the campaign, he signaled a willingness to intervene, but also cautioned: “There’s a lot of cruelty around the world. We’re not going to be able to be everywhere all the time.”

HOW MUCH DOES HE HAVE TO PLACATE THE LEFT?

In his inaugural speech, Obama spoke of tired ideologies and a time to think anew about policy and politics. That is easy to do if he simply means rejecting Bush’s idea. But he has suggested this rethinking will hit the left, too – that’s trickier.

Some times, Obama has been wiling to tick off the left. He picked Rick Warren, a Christian conservative, to deliver Tuesday’s opening prayer and filled his cabinet and staff mainly with centrists. Other times, he seems to bend to liberal frustration.

Obama nixed John Brennan’s appointment to be CIA director after anti-torture advocates expressed outrage over Brennan’s involvement in Bush-era interrogations. Brennan’s going to be working in the White House anyway, but not in any position that requires Senate confirmation. Obama also quickly moved to give a prime role to Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson, an openly gay religious leader from New Hampshire, when liberals protested the choice of Warren to deliver the inaugural prayer.

Politically savvy liberal activists are an important reason Obama beat Hillary Rodham Clinton in the Democratic nominating contest, and a big reason he blew through all fund-raising records. It will be hard for Obama to govern without their enthusiasm, onthe other hand, it will be tough to reinvent politics if Obama is forced to routinely throw bouquets to the various factions of the Democratic Party.

Obama Attacks Founding Documents As Insufficient, In Need Of Change, Sets Stage For Revolution - With Video

This is from his speech in Philadelphia this morning. Where better to announce the founding of a new nation shaped in his image? And where else, more mocking, more audacious? And where else, better to fool people, as a patriot?

Obama:

“It was these ideals that led us to declare independence, and craft our constitution, producing documents that were imperfect but had within them, like our nation itself, the capacity to be made more perfect.

We are here today not simply to pay tribute to our first patriots but to take up the work that they began.

And yet while our problems may be new, what is required to overcome them is not. What is required is the same perseverance and idealism that our founders displayed. What is required is a new declaration of independence not just in our nation, but in our own lives..independence from ideology…

We should not forget we are the heirs of those who declared independence…and who somehow believed that they had the power to make the world anew, that’s the spirit we must reclaim …for the American Revolution did not end when the British guns fell silent…it was never something to be ended on a battlefield, or fulfilled in our founding documents…the American Revolution was and remains an ongoing struggle in the minds and hearts of the people…so starting now, let’s take up in our own lives, the work of perfecting our Union. Let’s build a government…let all of us do our part to rebuild this country, let’s make sure this election is not the end of what we do to change America, but just the beginning.”

Later in another city, he made reference to the need for our Constitution to be rewritten as “more perfect”.

Who gets to define that? And why is that definition expected to be better than the definition left us by the Founding Fathers?

There is no such thing as a person free of ideology. An ideology is simply one’s set of beliefs, however cohesive or disparate. Clearly what you are saying is that you want everyone to abandon their current ideology and adopt a new one. What is that ideology?

Let’s build a government? We don’t have one, or you simply want a new one? What type of government would that be?

Rebuild the country? Are there plans to tear it down? Because it hasn’t been torn down, yet. What foreknowledge do you have of it being torn down, and what exactly do you then want to rebuild it into?

The beginning of changing America? Into what?

Obama: Deceiver, Cheat, Swindler, Liar, Fraudster, Con Artist

We know that Obama is a liar about so many things.

The question of whether or not he is in fact, a Natural Born Citizen and eligible to be President of The United States of America, has no importance anymore. The question of eligibility has evolved far beyond that simple question, with such a simple solution, that Obama refuses to provide. The government of Kenya has put a Gag Order on his family not to talk to reporters.

What we don’t know, what there is absolutely no proof of, is his place of birth, his true father or his mother. Without a verifiable Birth Certificate, none of this, including his actual date of birth can be proven or believed.

He shows no loyalty to America and in fact publicly displays his contempt for America. On youtube.com, you can type in the search bar: “Obama refuses to salute flag” and see a video of him refusing to pledge allegiance to the flag and acting as if he is making a point that he has no respect for the American flag.

Michelle Obama is just as arrogant and insulting as the man she calls her husband and has not been a lawyer since 1993 when she was put on inactive status by court order. The State of Illinois says so on their website. Click here then on the top right click on “Lawyer Search” and then type in “Obama” and you’ll find her.

In Hawaii, you can read here: United States Marines and Navy servicemen have no respect for Obama. In an ABC News story, Sunlen Miller says, “The diners were polite, staying seated at their respective tables and waited for the president-elect to come to them to stand up”.

The photo in the article shows that there is nobody standing up to shake hands with him and some have their backs turned to Obama. If those people, trying to enjoy their meal in peace, had thrown their food in that stinking bum’s face with disgust, ABC News could have reported it as, “The soldiers were so overjoyed to catch a glimpse of their Commander In Chief Elect, that like true Marines, they all chipped in to share their Holiday meal with him.”

Obama’s website Change.gov is a fraud, administered by a fund raising company Blue State Digital, an Internet fund-raising company that presided over the Obama campaign site. The “dot gov” is designated and assigned by the United States Government Services Administration to be used only for genuine governent activities. It is not for political campaigning or non-profit organizations which is exactly and soley what Change.gov is for. The only reason Obama has the dot gov designation is by harassing the GSA and thereby obtaining the dot gov designation illegally against Federal Law.

With Obama’s total disrespect for America and laws in general, it is highly suspect as to why he is not already in jail for the rest of his life. Even stupid crimes, he has no conscience about. He, just last year, paid off 17 outstanding parking tickets from when he was in Cambridge, supposedly going to school at Harvard.

Some of the stories about Obama defy belief. And there are plenty of unfounded rumors about him.

I hear so many "Internet rumors" and see so many News sites, web sites and blogs that it makes it very difficult to know what is true and what isn't. That is why I try to limit what I write to things that can be verified fairly easily. Some of the emails and phone calls and personal visits I get force me to not believe anything unless I can prove it. Some "hot tips" are things I've known for years and some seem to be someone's idea of writing a fantasy spy novel.

Besides an atmosphere of arrogance and hostility surrounding his supporters, an unexplainable, incredible amount of controversy permeates every thing about him.

Rumors turn more and more bizarre every day.

Then there is the knowledgeable, open source or occasionally “gray” source, of intel tidbits that hit my desk, from so far, reliable sources that defy reality.

For instance, I was told the other day that it was not really necessary for me to publicize events about Obama because a complete dossier with statements, photos, tape recordings and video recordings of Obama's secret backers has been compiled with the help of over 200 high profile international lawyers, military men, politicians and businesspeople and has been distributed to the intel agencies of some 38 different countries, some of which had contributed to the compilation effort.

These "secret backers" of Obama have been under intense investigation for over two decades without any initial focus on Obama and a major world wide sweep is going to happen as soon as Obama makes the wrong move.

The backers consider Obama “their puppet” but a major world wide sweep is scheduled to happen as soon as Obama makes a clear wrong move against the national interests of those who have put this compilation together.

I'm sure he is going to make that "wrong move" as soon as Martians land at the White House. Maybe, though, as I am urged, since it's all under control now, I should take a vacation.

These are the kinds of dead ends that any investigator has to decipher.

But sticking to the facts, what we actually do know, what is documented and verifiable, is enough to convince the American public and World leaders that a major mistake has been made in voting for Obama.

But who is to show that record to the voting public and World leades who will be affected by Obama’s deceit?

If the American media would unite as strongly to divulge the truth, as they have to bury it, every person in America would vomit where they sit, in realizing what they have been conned into voting for.

There is still, after six weeks, not one shred of proof that his grandmother died the day before the election or two days before the election, whichever date given by Obama that you choose to believe. No death certificate has been produced. No authority has confirmed the date of death. We have only Obama’s campaign photo-ops of him wiping away a tear.

The recent photo-op of him dropping what he says are the ashes of Madelyn Payne Lee Dunham into the sea is phony. Human ashes are not snow white. Human bones do not burn and are not turned to ash when cremated. The bones are ground up to the consistency of sand and small pebbles. The color is a gray/tan, like weathered pine wood. The container he is pouring from is half the size necessary for human remains. The container he is pouring from is about the size of a container for a medium sized dog’s ashes. Obama is pouring flour or sugar, not human ashes.

What Obama and Rahm Emanuel have told us they are going to institute for American citizens - mandatory community service and to transport people by bus or train to work sites, is defined as nothing less than, Crimes Against Humanity, according to the International Criminal Court.(Scroll down to International Criminal Court, see c. and d.)

Regardless of the rumors, the non-existent birth certificate and his purported crimes, just reading 1/10 of 158 of Obama’s lies would be enough to convince any reasonable person that this man is not someone that you would buy a used car from or let cook your food. Reading one half of these documented lies will make an honest person sick to his stomache.

Obama, his wife and his backers have no morals, no integrity and no respect for anything except what they want at the time. They have no more conscience than a hungry lizard in the desert coming upon a beetle in the sand.

Obama used the fabricated death of his Grandmother to get a few sympathy votes in the final hours of his campaign. The Democratic Party Electors of the Electoral College used an 8 year old cadaver to cast a single vote, by certifying to the California Secretary of State that a deceased lady was a qualified Elector.

Any non-active military service members who have seen enough, sign this Military Consent Form and get on board like the Marines in Hawaii.

Many people have speculated that Obama may be a “Manchurian Candidate” a planted enemy, masquerading as an American, for the purpose of taking over the United States. Speculations have pointed to the Middle East and terrorist organizations. That does seem to be a possibility as there are so many anti-American statements and activities by Obama and his supporters. It may sound like more fantasy spy novel dreams.

But if the speculation can be considered, in some degree of seriousness, the question to be asked first is: Who, what organization, has had the time and the resources, to move throughout our political system, convincing Congressmen, Senators, both Federal and State, 50 Governors, Attorney Generals, Secretaries of State, hundreds of State legislators, thousands of local, county, State and Federal political party hacks, FBI, CIA and various State and Federal agencies, Federal Courts, even the US Supreme Court……..who has that ability to keep all these people silent? Who has the ability to force the entire Republican Party, Nationwide, Statewide and even local politicians into stone cold silence without a peep being uttered against Obama? Would it not make sense for the Republican Party to expose him, or at least pose questions?

It is absolutely preposterous to believe that this has all been planned for 40 years and perpetrated by some outside group of super secret elites. It makes more sense to consider that all the mysteries and lies about Obama have only one single purpose which is to throw us off the trail, divide us in our investigative efforts. The countless lies and unavailable documentation sends us up one blind alley after another, only to find another lie to chase to nowhere. Eliminate the enormous complexities and concentrate on the simplest of clues, the most obvious suspects that our mind does not want us to see, and we may just discover that in reality, the culprits are hiding in plain sight, right under our noses.

With that in mind, I can think of only two organizations that have proven that they can hide, and have hidden, their actions against us in plain sight. Only two organizations can organize and corrupt the thousands of players involved in this “Master of the Game” endeavor. And rather than risk their wrath by exposing them in writing, I will only say that the name of one organization starts with the letter “D” and rhymes with Emocrat and the other starts with “R” and rhymes with Epublican.

Dissecting Dershowitz: Left … And Right

Harvard Law Professor Alan M. Dershowitz is that rare individual who is both a highly respected academic and well known to the general population.

But in another regard he is even rarer. He regards himself as a man of the left, yet on one of the defining moral issues of our time, attitudes toward Israel, he has nothing in common with the left. He is not only one of Israel’s staunchest supporters, he spends much of his time defending Israel. He has written innumerable articles and four books defending Israel: “The Case against Israel’s Enemies: Exposing Jimmy Carter and Others Who Stand in the Way of Peace,” “The Case for Peace: How the Arab-Israeli Conflict Can Be Resolved,” “The Case for Israel,” and “What Israel Means to Me: By 80 Prominent Writers, Performers, Scholars, Politicians, and Journalists.”

This past week, Dershowitz wrote two eloquent columns defending Israel’s attack on Hamas in Gaza. One was titled “Israel, Hamas, and Moral Idiocy,” published in the Christian Science Monitor and the other, “Israel’s Policy Is Perfectly ‘Proportionate,’” was published in the Wall Street Journal.

In his Monitor column, Dershowitz describes “three types of international response to the Israeli military actions against the Hamas rockets” — “Iran, Hamas, and other knee-jerk Israeli-bashers,” “the United Nations, the European Union, Russia, and others who, at least when it comes to Israel, see a moral and legal equivalence between terrorists who target civilians and a democracy that responds by targeting the terrorists,” and “the United States and a few other nations that place the blame squarely on Hamas.”

It is relevant to the question I will pose that he omits any mention of the world’s left, even when mentioning the European Union. Who exactly in the European Union is condemning Israel? Its conservatives? Who in America is condemning Israel? Conservatives? Who in Australia or Canada? Conservatives? Of course not. As regards Israel (and America and much else), the Western world’s moral idiots, to use the term in the title of the Dershowitz column, are virtually all on the left, including and especially many of his colleagues in academia.

So, I have a question for my friend Dershowitz. (I say ‘friend’ because we’ve known each other for years and debated and dialogued together.)

Given that Israel’s security is so important to you, given that you believe that the ability to morally distinguish between Israel and its enemies is tantamount to the ability to distinguish between good and evil, and given that those who condemn Israel for its “disproportionate” response to Hamas terror-rockets are almost all on the left in America and Europe, why do you continue to identify yourself as a man of the left?

Everyone who thinks sometimes differs with one’s ideological compatriots. But when one’s ideological compatriots are morally wrong on the greatest moral issue of the moment and perhaps the very clearest as well, don’t you at least suffer from cognitive dissonance?

It seems that to avoid this cognitive dissonance, Dershowitz engages in some intellectual denial. Just as he avoids any mention of the left in his column on the world’s moral idiots at the present moment, he does criticize the right for having its anti-Israel moral fools. In his book “The Case against Israel’s Enemies,” he has a chapter on the far left and a chapter on the far right, as if there is any equivalence of impact. And as if the existence of anti-Israel voices on that insignificant “far right” somehow balances the staggering number of anti-Israel voices on the huge left, whether far or not so far.

Dershowitz himself repeatedly acknowledges how inverted moral thinking reigns on American campuses.

To cite just two examples: In 2005 Dershowitz wrote, “It’s no coincidence that so many of the professors leading the campaign against Harvard President Lawrence Summers for his recent comments about women in science also were in the vanguard of the campaign to divest from Israel and boycott Israeli academics.” And in 2007: “The only people who tremble on campuses are students at Columbia and Berkeley who are worried that they’ll be graded down for being pro-Israel.”

Now which part of the American political spectrum dominates the universities, the left or the right? The former, of course. But Dershowitz won’t put two and two together, at least publicly, and conclude that there is something fundamentally and morally flawed about the left and its values.

Dershowitz undoubtedly reads the New York Times and Boston Globe editorials as well as those of the Wall Street Journal. So he knows that only the conservative editorials of the Wall Street Journal routinely defend Israel.

He knows that with few exceptions, there are no pro-Israel left-wing journals as there are right-wing pro-Israel journals, such as the Wall Street Journal, the Weekly Standard, and National Review.

He knows that Israel is routinely bashed on left-wing talk radio (including, though more subtly, on NPR) and that Israel is constantly defended on right-wing talk radio.

He knows that on the Internet, the most virulent attacks on Israel are on the left, while the most pro-Israel websites are nearly all conservative and right wing.

But none of this matters. Dershowitz still morally equates left and right and considers himself a man of the left.

Why?


I welcome Dershowitz’s response. Here is mine.

One reason, I believe, is that to acknowledge the moral failure of the left, especially the secular left, on most of the great moral issues of the post-World War II era — the Cold War, the Middle East, confronting (or even acknowledging the existence of) the Islamist threat — is very difficult for a person on the left, even one as analytical as Dershowitz. Secular leftism is analogous to Arthur Koestler’s “god that failed.” And few people want to confront the fact that the ideal, the god they bet their lives on, is a false god.

Second, to acknowledge the broken moral compass that guides the left is to implicitly endorse the right, especially the religious right. But that is very difficult for anyone on the left to do because the essence of the secular left is a rejection of the Christian right. That it is conservatives, especially religious conservatives, who are the most stalwart supporters of Israel, must greatly disturb Dershowitz.

And, it is precisely among those who most reject Judeo-Christian values that anti-Israel moral idiocy prevails. How does Dershowitz explain that? That’s my question.

THE HADITHA CASE IN BRIEF…


Eight Marines were originally charged Dec. 21, 2006, with crimes related to the deaths of 24 Iraqi civilians during a bloody, door-to-door sweep in the town of Haditha. The deaths occurred after 1 Marine was killed and others were wounded by a roadside bomb Nov. 19, 2005. Evidence of a massacre never materialized, and the original reports by the news media, as well as slanderous comments by Congressman John Murtha (D-PA), have been thoroughly discredited.

Initially, four enlisted men were charged with unpremeditated murder, and four officers were accused of failing to properly investigate. To date, charges have been dismissed against six Marines, while one was found not guilty on all counts in courts-martial. In June 2008, a military judge dismissed charges against Lt. Col. Jeffrey R. Chessani, who was the battalion commander at the time, after finding the case was improperly influenced by an investigator. Prosecutors have sought a new trial and a decision is pending. The sole remaining defendant is the squad leader, Staff Sgt. Frank D. Wuterich, whose court-martial is not yet scheduled.

This Marine needs our help or he will become the sacrificial lamb. With only a couple of weeks left in the Bush Administration, I am asking that every one of you call the White House public comments line at 202-456-1111, fax the President at 202-456-2461 or send an email to comments@whitehouse.gov and ask that Staff Sgt Wuterich be pardoned. Better yet, take five minutes from your day and do all three. As I have said many times before, if you ever wonder if our brave men and women in uniform would do the same for you, remember:

THEY ALREADY ARE.

We have proven we can shape policy with our collective voices. Now let’s prove that we can right wrongs. You have your marching orders troops. Let’s give Staff Sgt Wuterich the fire support he deserves. Manchu.
