Obama Legitimizes Killing of Unborn Babies in Speech at Notre Dame's Graduation

(CNSNews.com) - After receiving an honorary doctorate in law at the University of Notre Dame’s graduation ceremony yesterday, President Barack Obama delivered a speech to the school's graduating seniors that sought to legitimize his position in favor of the legal killing of unborn children.

Obama told the graduates of the nation’s most well-known Catholic university that abortion “has both moral and spiritual dimensions”--although he did not explain why he had made this conclusion—and made it quite clear that, even so, he has no intention of moving from his position that it ought to be legal for a pregnant mother to have a doctor kill her unborn child for literally any reason at any stage of pregnancy.

The president also did not take back his declaration made in 2007 to Planned Parenthood that he would sign the Freedom of Choice Act, a bill that would eliminate all the state and federal limitations on abortion that have been achieved by the pro-life movement in the 26 years since the Supreme Court legalized abortion on demand in its 1973 Roe v. Wade decision.

Nor did Obama rescind his vow to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act that currently protects states that do not recognize same-sex marriages from being compelled by the Full Faith and Credit Clause of the Constitution to recognize same-sex marriages contracted in other states.

Nor did he reverse his executive order allowing federal tax dollars to be used for research that kills human embryos in order to extract their stem cells.

Nor did he reverse his order to allow U.S. foreign aid dollars to be used to perform and promote abortion in foreign countries.

But he did lecture the Notre Dame graduates that the “two camps are irreconcilable” on the question of whether unborn life ought to be protected in law or left vulnerable to abortion, making it clear that he falls on the pro-abortion side of this unbridgeable divide.

Much of his speech exalted the idea that for pro-lifers to work together with people who favor the legal killing of unborn children is a more civilized and noble cause than the cause of protecting innocent life itself.

“The gay activist and the evangelical pastor may both deplore the ravages of HIV/AIDS, but find themselves unable to bridge the cultural divide that might unite their efforts,” Obama said. “Those who speak out against stem cell research may be rooted in an admirable conviction about the sacredness of life, but so are the parents of a child with juvenile diabetes who are convinced that their son's or daughter's hardships can be relieved.”

“The question then,” said Obama, “is how do we work through these conflicts? Is it possible for us to join hands in common effort? As citizens of a vibrant and varied democracy, how do we engage in vigorous debate? How does each of us remain firm in our principles, and fight for what we consider right, without, as [Notre Dame President] Father John [Jenkins] said, demonizing those with just as strongly held convictions on the other side? And of course, nowhere do these questions come up more powerfully than on the issue of abortion.”

“That's when we begin to say, ‘Maybe we won't agree on abortion, but we can still agree that this heart-wrenching decision for any woman is not made casually, it has both moral and spiritual dimensions,” said Obama.

“So let us work together to reduce the number of women seeking abortions, let's reduce unintended pregnancies,” said Obama. “Let's make adoption more available. Let's provide care and support for women who do carry their children to term. Let's honor the conscience of those who disagree with abortion, and draft a sensible conscience clause, and make sure that all of our health care policies are grounded not only in sound science, but also in clear ethics, as well as respect for the equality of women. Those are things we can do.”

“Now, understand, Class of 2009, I do not suggest that the debate surrounding abortion can or should go away. Because no matter how much we may want to fudge it--indeed, while we know that the views of most Americans on the subject are complex and even contradictory--the fact is that at some level, the views of the two camps are irreconcilable,” said Obama. “Each side will continue to make its case to the public with passion and conviction. But surely we can do so without reducing those with differing views to caricature. Open hearts. Open minds. Fair-minded words. It's a way of life that has always been the Notre Dame tradition.”

ND Response has received official permission to hold a prayerful and constructive demonstration on the South Quad of the University of Notre Dame between 11am and 4pm on the day of Commencement. The students of this coalition would like to extend an invitation to all those interested in joining us on campus on May 17th as we respectfully give witness to Notre Dame's Catholic identity and pro-life principles.

In defense of the unborn, we wish to express our deepest opposition to Reverend John I. Jenkins, C.S.C.’s invitation of President Barack Obama to be the University of Notre Dame’s principal commencement speaker and the recipient of an honorary degree. Our objection is not a matter of political partisanship, but of President Obama’s hostility to the Catholic Church’s teachings on the sanctity of human life at its earliest stages. Further, the University’s decision runs counter to the policy of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops against honoring pro-choice politicians. We cannot sit by idly while the University honors someone who believes that an entire class of human beings is undeserving of the most basic of all legal rights, the right to live.

Additionally, Fr. Jenkins has put some of his students into a position of moral dilemma as to whether they should attend their own graduation. Many pro-life seniors, along with their families, now feel personally conflicted about participating in the commencement. The lack of concern for these devoted sons and daughters of Notre Dame, who love this University and the Catholic principles on which it was built, is shameful.

I was gently corrected that both of the mentioned laws can only be overturned through acts of Congress. At this time, the Senate has passed the legislation to overturn the pro-life bills that President Bush signed. President Obama has pledged to sign this legislation, which he requested, when it comes to his desk. However, he has not rescinded them, as yet.

Pro-life Executive Orders made by President George Bush that President Obama has overturned in the past 2 months:

* Reversal of limitations on embryonic stem cell research and experimenting with tissues from abortions or frozen embryos.

Pope challenges Pelosi on abortion stance

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi recently had a 15-minute meeting with Pope Benedict XVI.

The meeting was held Wednesday in a small room in the Vatican after Benedict's weekly public audience. Judie Brown of American Life League tells OneNewsNow the meeting was private, but the Vatican did release a statement, noting the pope challenged Pelosi's stance on abortion issues.

"But I am very grateful that the Holy Father called her up, if you will, on her horrible position in favor of supporting the abortion of preborn babies," Brown notes.

She is also thankful that the Vatican issued the statement, going public with a politician's responsibilities to the Word. The Associated Press reports Benedict urged politicians to value life "at all stages of its development" and to protect the dignity of human life "from conception to natural death."

"Pelosi is an insult to the Roman Catholic Church," Brown contends, "and I'm glad that the Vatican recognizes this."

Brown adds that the pope could have simply shaken Pelosi's hand and had a cordial meeting, but he embraced the opportunity instead to promote life. "He took the opportunity to point out the grave error of her ways -- and I think that does send a message to pro-abortion politicians everywhere all over the world," she concludes. That message? "If they happen to be Catholic, they cannot support killing."

AP notes that several Catholic bishops in the U.S. have questioned the House Speaker's pro-abortion stance and staunch defense of women's "right to choose."

Pro-life pastor prepares for sentencing

An Oakland, California, pastor could face jail time for expressing his pro-life views.

Pastor Walter Hoye ran into trouble with an abortion clinic while doing an informational picket. Dennis Howard, leader of The Movement for a Better America, believes Hoye is innocent.

"His approach was simply to carry a sign that said 'Jesus Loves You. Can We Help?' and offering those who wanted it some information about alternatives to abortion," Howard explains.

A complaint was filed and Hoye was found guilty in spite of proof to the contrary. "There was a video taken of him doing this, and it shows that he was not harassing anybody," Howard points out. "In fact, he was being harassed by escorts from the abortion clinic."

Pastor Hoye faces up to two years in jail and a $4,000 fine. Howard is calling Christians into action. "We feel that pro-life organizations around the country ought to take up this man's cause and pray and fast between now and February 19," he concludes.

That is when Hoye is due to be sentenced.

Mother Files Suit After 'Born Alive' Abortion

CBNNews.com - On July 20, 2006, Sycloria Williams gave birth to a baby girl she once thought would never be born.

The then 18-year-old had paid $1,200 to terminate her 23-week pregnancy. The abortion doctor, Dr. Pierre Jean-Jacque Renelique, was to perform the procedure at the GYN Diagnostic Center in Hialeah, Fla., just outside Miami.

But Williams went into labor early and delivered a live birth, according to her and the Florida Department of Health. After seeing the baby, she had a change of heart.

To her shock, however, instead of putting the baby into a care unit, one of the clinic's owners cut the child's umbilical cord, placed her in a biohazard bag, and threw her away, lawyers representing Williams say.

Now, she is suing 13 medical workers, including the clinic owner Belkis Gonzalez and Dr. Renelique for "unlicensed and unauthorized medical practices, botched abortions, evasive tactics, false medical records and the killing, hiding and disposing" of the baby.

"The baby was just treated as a piece of garbage," said Tom Brejcha, president of The Thomas More Society, which is overseeing Williams' case. They argue that the doctors' performance constitutes murder.

Renelique's attorney, Joseph Harrison, told The Associated Press he thought the allegations were "misguided and incomplete."

An Ongoing Act?

Police found the remains of Williams' daughter about a week after the botched abortion. An autopsy confirmed that her baby's lungs had filled with air before she was put in the bag, meaning she was born alive, the Department of Health said.

Jill Stanek, executive director of BornAliveTruth.org, told CBN News cases like Williams' sadly happen more often than reported.

"This is going on rampantly around the country," she charged.

Stanek co-sponsored the release of 22 Weeks, a short film based on the case of another Florida woman whose baby was born alive at an abortion clinic. That baby then died after doctors
refused to care for the child.

She believes that it's not unusual for doctors to have charts and medical records changed to show babies as "still-born" when they are really "born alive."

Hope for Justice

Stanek said Florida authorities have been "squeamish" about handling any case involving the possible murder of a child. She has discussed Williams' situation and others on her WorldNetDaily column.

"I have spoken with the police who are a part of the investigation and they are very upset," she claimed. "They've been trying to get prosecutors to work on this case for a long time."

In order to prosecute on murder charges, authorities have to prove Williams' baby was indeed born alive.Meanwhile, the Department of Health has called for the Florida Board of Medicine to strip Renelique of his license. The group will hold a hearing Friday to decide whether the doctor can continue his practice.

Records show Renelique received his medical training at the State University of Haiti and completed his residency in 1991 at Interfaith Medical Center in New York.

Reports in that state also reveal Renelique has made at least five medical malpractice payments in the last 10 years, though details behind the cases are unclear.

How will future generations judge us on abortion?

Just two days after the inauguration, another crowd filled Washington’s streets: pro-lifers who gather each year for the March for Life. January 22 marked the 36th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, and, after so many years with little change or improvement in abortion law, the nation has grown a bit blasé about this annual demonstration. We still say abortion is a hot issue—but it’s not as hot as it used to be. The abortion controversy used to command cover space on magazines, while TV networks hosted hour-long debates. You don’t see that any more.

Maybe people just got tired of hearing about it. Year after year, the two sides said mostly the same thing—and nothing much changed. Eventually, public attention was bound to sidle off to some new, more exciting topic (gay marriage, anyone?). When attention drifted, it was the pro-choice side that had command of the status quo.

And you could say that settles that; from now on there will be less and less talk about abortion, and we’ll just get used to things the way they are.

But I can imagine things going a different way. Not soon—maybe not till the baby boomers have passed from the scene—but it’s possible that a younger generation will see abortion differently. With abortions now running around 1.2 million per year, the total number of abortions since Roe v. Wade is about 49 million. That’s a big number—about a sixth of the U.S. population. It’s an especially big number if you’re not absolutely sure that it’s not a real loss of human life.

After all, if you see a little girl hit by a car, you’re going to yell, “Get an ambulance!” not “Get a shovel!” It’s in the very fabric of humanity to be on the side of life if there’s the faintest hope that life exists. We don’t throw children away when we’re not sure whether they’re alive or not. And, as the pro-choice side never stops saying, it’s not that they’re positive a fetus is not alive—it’s that they’re not sure. As the cliché goes, “Nobody knows when life begins.”

When I was a young, fire-breathing college feminist in the early 1970s, we didn’t see abortion as a melancholy private decision—it was an act of liberation. By choosing abortion, a woman could show that she was the only person in charge of her life and bowed to no one else’s control. But this formulation soured as the grief felt by post-abortion women began to accumulate. The flip side of autonomy is loneliness, and, for many women, their abortion decision was linked to emotional abandonment.

And then there was the advent of ultrasound technology, enabling us to see live images of the baby moving in the womb. In 1989, word went round the pro-life movement to order the tape of pollster Harrison Hickman’s presentation at that year’s NARAL convention. On it he said, “Nothing has been as damaging to our cause as the advances in technology which have allowed pictures of the developing fetus, because people now talk about that fetus in much different terms than they did 15 years ago. They talk about it as a human being, which is not something that I have an easy answer how to cure.”

So there are some reasons to think that the abortion question has not been settled, but has merely gone underground. That might be a necessary step. It has to go away so that it can be rediscovered and seen in a fresh light.

I don’t expect that reconsideration soon: My boomer generation will never see abortion as anything other than the wise and benevolent gift we bestowed on all future generations. We still control the media, the universities, and so forth, and it will take time for all of us to topple off the end of the conveyor belt.

But the time is coming when a younger generation will be in charge, and they may well see abortion differently. They could see it not as “a woman’s choice” but as a form of state-sanctioned violence inflicted on their generation. It was their brothers and sisters who died; anyone under the age of 36 could have been aborted, and somewhere around a fourth or a fifth of all babies are. A younger generation might feel a strange kinship with the brothers and sisters, classmates and coworkers, who are missing.

And I’m afraid that if they do see things that way, they aren’t going to go easy on my generation. Our acceptance of abortion is not going to look like an understandable goof. The next generation can fairly say, “It’s not like they didn’t know.” They’ll say, “After all, they had sonograms.”

Even in my generation, people who think of themselves as defenders of the weak and the oppressed may occasionally have a quiet moment when they wonder, “How, on this one issue, did I wind up on the side that’s defending death?”

There's a lot of ambivalence out there, and a lot of unspoken grief too, I think. Our pro-choice generation may have won the day—but sooner or later, that day will end. No generation can rule from the grave. When that time comes, another generation will sit in judgment on ours. And they may judge us to be monsters.

Note: While I applaud Frederica for writing this, I have to say that I am less concerned about what future generations might think of my pro-choice generation and much more concerned about how God will judge us all, including those that come after us. For in the end we will ultimately be held accountable for our actions by Him.

The legacy we leave behind will have far reaching effects on future generations including our iniquity in the present.

Few on the pro-choice side consider the ruined lives of both mothers and fathers who have gone through the trauma of abortion and the lasting consequences of that choice. There are alternatives, education being one of them, but perhaps that is a discussion for another day.

I fear the wrath of God much more than I fear the label "monsters". The suffering of future generations because of our own self interests and allowing this abomination to continue is a real concern.

Abortion is murder of the innocents. Catholics have it named correctly. "The Crimson Holocaust".

A Kansas state senator wants to defund Planned Parenthood.

Republican Senator Tim Huelskamp explains why he believes it is time to drop funding of the abortion provider. "Planned Parenthood has been under criminal investigation for nearly a year now, and they've found probable cause to have committed 107 misdemeanor and felony counts in our state," he contends.

On a national level, Planned Parenthood gets many millions of federal tax dollars and makes a sizeable profit, even though it is a nonprofit organization. "It makes no sense that hundreds of thousands of pro-life Kansans have to fork over more than $550,000 to this organization," he adds. "That's the amount we've discovered."

Huelskamp is submitting a bill to the Kansas legislature to defund the abortion provider. "I think it's time to stop subsidizing the actions of an organization that operates under a cloud of suspicion and scandal," he concludes.

Abuse Pattern Develops As Second Planned Parenthood Covers Up Statutory Rape Of 13 Year-Old

INDIANAPOLIS, Dec. 16 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Undercover footage from a second Indiana Planned Parenthood clinic shows an emerging pattern of abuse, as more clinic counselors evade their legal responsibility to report the statutory rape of young girls. The new footage is the second video in Live Action Film’s “Mona Lisa Project,” a series of investigations documenting how secret abortions keep young girls trapped in cycles of sexual abuse.

In the video, shot undercover this summer at a Planned Parenthood in Indianapolis, two employees state they “don’t care” about the age difference between a 31-year-old man and the 13-year-old girl he was reported to have impregnated. A previously released video shot at a Bloomington Planned Parenthood showed similar results. Neither the Bloomington nor Indianapolis clinics reported the rape and both clinics counseled the 13-year-old to obtain a secret abortion across state lines where no parental consent laws applied.

At both clinics, Lila Rose, student journalist and president of Live Action, enters posing as a 13-year-old girl and discloses she is pregnant by a 31-year-old man. The Indianapolis staffer states, “We don’t really care about who, what, the age of the boyfriend.” She then sends Rose to a counselor, who after hearing about the 31-year-old also states, “I don’t care how old he is.” When Rose tells the counselor that her mother would be upset about the 31-year-old boyfriend, the counselor informs Rose that “the surrounding states don’t have parental consent. I can’t tell you anymore.”

In Bloomington, the nurse declares, “I don’t want to know how old he is” and instructs Rose to travel to an Illinois Planned Parenthood and say her 31-year-old boyfriend is only fourteen. Although the Bloomington clinic fired its nurse, Rose says this is not an isolated incident. “We have more videos documenting this pattern of law-breaking within Planned Parenthood. There are actual cases all across the country where their failure to follow state statutes has allowed predators to continue their sexual abuse of young girls.”

On Monday, Indiana Attorney General Steve Carter launched an investigation of Planned Parenthood in response to the Bloomington footage. Indiana State Representative Jackie Walorski and right-to-life advocacy groups including American Life League publicly called for the investigation. In 2005, the Attorney General also sought the records of 84 Planned Parenthood patients under the age of fourteen who may have been victims of sexual abuse, but Planned Parenthood sued to prevent their release.’

Rose commends the Attorney General’s efforts. “We applaud Mr. Carter’s integrity and urge him to conduct a thorough and complete investigation, despite any political attacks Planned Parenthood may attempt against him personally or his office.”

Rose challenges Planned Parenthood to cooperate. “Planned Parenthood must release files they have previously sued to keep private and allow state authorities to conduct a complete investigation.” She adds, “Mandatory reporting laws are necessary for the protection of young girls, and Planned Parenthood must not be allowed to sabotage them.”

Operation Rescue's headquarters is next door to the abortion clinic where the incident happened. Spokesperson Cheryl Sullinger was there.

"There was a chemical substance spread on the driveway near where pro-lifers pray at George Tiller's abortion clinic, and it made two women very, very sick," she explains. "They were vomiting; one had to be treated at the emergency room -- she had swelling of the eyes."

Doctors said the reaction came from exposure to a foreign substance and was not related to any viral or bacterial infection. Sullinger says two aspects greatly concern her.

"We think that this kind of attack against pro-lifers is shocking and it's cowardly," says Sullinger. "And the fact that the authorities don't seem to be interested in stopping this kind of thing really is troubling to us."

That alone, she suggests, encourages repeat performances. Operation Rescue has reported death threats recently, as well as vandalism at the property.
